Every workshop has a job someone does badly because the right tool for it does not exist — a part held by hand while it is drilled, an assembly aligned by eye, a step that takes two people because nothing holds it steady. Printed jigs and fixtures fix exactly that. They are cheap enough to be worth making for a single repetitive task, and quick enough to redesign when the first version turns out to be almost right.

Materials for this work

PLA

Display pieces, models and indoor parts where crisp detail and colour matter more than heat resistance.

PETG

The general-purpose workhorse — tougher than PLA, handles moisture and moderate heat, good for functional parts.

ASA

Outdoor and vehicle parts. UV-stable and weather-resistant, so it will not go brittle or fade in sunlight.

TPU

Flexible parts — gaskets, bumpers, grips, protective sleeves and anything that needs to bend or absorb impact.

I know the problem but not the solution. Can you design the jig?

Yes — that is how most of these start. Tell us what the operation is, what the part looks like and what keeps going wrong, and we will design something around it. A first version in your hands beats a specification on paper for finding out what it really needs.

Will a printed jig stand up to daily production use?

In the right material, yes. PETG handles general workshop knocks well and ASA copes with heat and UV. For anything seeing solvents, sustained heat or serious clamping loads, tell us and we will say honestly whether printing is the right answer — sometimes it is not, and we would rather say so.

What if the first version is not quite right?

Expect that, and budget a little for it. Version two costs a reprint rather than remaking a machined fixture, which is exactly why printed tooling is worth it. Most jigs settle by the second or third iteration.

Can you print a fixture bigger than your build envelope?

Individual pieces print up to 256 × 256 × 256 mm. Larger fixtures are printed in sections and assembled, and for tooling we will often design them to bolt together deliberately, so a worn section can be replaced without remaking the whole thing.
